Microphones
I suspect that a recording can only be as good as the microphone used to record it whatever the medium you use to make the recording on. At the same time as I bought the Walkman Professional WM-D6C I also bought a Sony ECM-909A Electret Condensor Stereo Microphone. I believe this model was available from at least as early as 1985 onwards.

Note: I can't find any data on when Sony started making this microphone but there are records on the net of people using it from 1985 onwards, it seems to have been often used with the WM-D6C.
