ICC are the real villains: Atherton, PTI
LONDON, Oct 1: Former England captain Mike Atherton has accused the International Cricket Council of "fudging" the verdict in the Oval ball tampering case so as not to upset the Asian bloc.
In his column in 'The Sunday Telegraph', Atherton said ICC was to be blamed for allowing the Oval Test fiasco to linger on and that its entire conduct during the controversy left a lot to be desired.
"If the spark was precipitated by bad umpiring, it was allowed to develop into a raging fire by the inability of the ICC to act promptly and rigorously," he said.
"The saga showed the ICC at their worst: prevaricating, in that a judgment which should have been handed out on the fourth evening of the game was allowed to fester for a month; callous, when it revealed confidential e-mails from an employee; and ultimately fudging a verdict so as not to upset the key players in this very political game - the Asian bloc."
The former cricketer turned commentator was also of the view that the Oval mistake should not cost Darrell Hair his job.
"It was the brusqueness and insensitivity of Hair's conduct, without a solid evidence, which was at fault," he said adding "I would like to see Hair umpire again at the top level, but I doubt if it will happen."
Lashing out further at ICC, he said the episode was the latest in a series of situations which have shown the ICC to be ineffective leaders of the game.
"From match-fixing, which they encouraged by scheduling a massive increase in one-day internationals, and then were slow to stamp out, to the tacit encouragement given to a despicable regime in Zimbabwe, the ICC resolutely and consistently fail to uphold the values they espouse," he claimed.
Questioning ICC's honesty and integrity, he said "the ICC's standard procedure for a breach in the code of conduct was not followed in this case.
"If it had been, a verdict would have been handed down by referee Mike Proctor the very evening Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was charged. Instead, when the big issue arose, the ICC official froze.
"Moreover, shortly after the ICC announced that Hair had been withdrawn from the Champions Trophy because of security concerns, India, the host country, flatly contradicted the game's chiefs. Who is being open and honest?"
Atherton said while ICC had succeeded in recent years in expanding the game, bringing in neutral umpires, and stamping out the worst excesses of bad behaviour, "on major issues affecting individual countries, paralysis usually results, in search of a solution which offends least."

हेयर को इंजमाम से माफी मांगनी चाहिए: इमरान

इस्लामाबाद (रॉयटर्स) : पाकिस्तान के पूर्व क्रिकेट कप्तान इमरान खान ने कहा है कि अंपायर डैरल हेयर में यदि कुछ नैतिकता बची है तो वह बॉल-टैम्परिंग' के आरोप से बरी हुए इंजमाम उल हक से माफी मांगे।
इमरान ने कहा कि मौजूदा पाकिस्तानी कप्तान इंजमाम के बॉल -टैम्परिंग आरोप से बरी होने के बाद यह साबित हो गया है कि इंजमाम पर यह आरोप गलत तरीके से लगाया गया था। एक अखबार ने इमरान के हवाले से शुक्रवार को कहा,' इंटरनैशनल क्रिकेट काउंसिल (आईसीसी) के फैसले से साबित हो गया है कि हेयर ने ओवल टेस्ट के दौरान और उसके बाद जो किया और कहा था, वह बिल्कुल गलत है।'
पाकिस्तान ने इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ पिछले महीने ओवल में चौथे और आखिरी टेस्ट में बॉल- टैम्परिंग का आरोप लगने के बाद चायकाल के बाद मैदान में उतरने से इनकार कर दिया था। ऑस्ट्रेलिया के हेयर और वेस्ट इंडीज के बिली डॉक्ट्रोव ने पाकिस्तान पर बॉल- टैम्परिंग का आरोप और फिर पांच रन का दंड लगाया था। पाकिस्तान के मैदान पर नहीं उतरने के बाद अंपायरों ने इंग्लैंड को विजेता घोषित कर दिया था।
पाकिस्तानी कप्तान इंजमाम पर उसके बाद आईसीसी ने बॉल-टैम्परिंग और खेल की प्रतिष्ठा गिराने के आरोप लगाए। इस मामले में आईसीसी की दो दिन की सुनवाई गुरुवार को पूरी हुई, जिसमें इंजमाम को बॉल-टैम्परिंग के आरोप में बरी कर दिया गया, लेकिन क्रिकेट की प्रतिष्ठा गिराने के आरोप में उन पर चार वन डे मैचों का प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया।
पाकिस्तान को १९९२ में वर्ल्ड कप जिताने वाले इमरान ने कहा, 'यह पाकिस्तान ,कप्तान इंजमाम और अन्य क्रिकेटरों की जीत है। यदि हेयर के मन में नैतिक मूल्यों के प्रति थोड़ा भी सम्मान बचा है तो वह तुरंत इंजमाम से माफी मांगे। मुझे खुशी है कि हमारी टीम इस आरोप से बरी हो गई है। हेयर ने उन्हें ऐसे अपराध में फंसाने के लिए सब कुछ किया जो वास्तव में उन्होंने किया ही नहीं था।'
इमरान ने हालांकि आईसीसी के इंजमाम पर चार मैचों का प्रतिबंध लगाने के फैसले का बचाव किया और कहा कि यह हल्की सजा थी। उन्होंने कहा,' यदि मैं कप्तान होता तो मैं कभी खेल नहीं रोकता। खेलने से इनकार करना खेल भावना और आईसीसी के आचार संहिता के खिलाफ है।' इस प्रतिबंध के कारण इंजमाम अगले महीने भारत में होने वाली चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी से बाहर हो गए हैं। हेयर भी चैंपियंस ट्राफी में अंपायरिंग नहीं कर पाएंगे, लेकिन वह अंपायरिंग को जारी रखना चाहते हैं।

पाकिस्तानी क्रिकेट कप्तान इंजमाम उल हक ने कहा कि आस्ट्रेलियाई अंपायर डेरेल हेयर के खिलाफ कोई एक्शन नहीं लेंगे। मैं इस ऐपीसोड को जल्दी से जल्दी भूलना चाहता हूं।
लंदन में 27 और 28 बालटेंपरिंग विवाद की सुनवाई के बाद इंजमाम शनिवार को स्वदेश लौटे जहां उनका जोरदार स्वागत किया गया। उन्होंने स्वदेश वापसी पर कहा कि वह कोई भी एक्शन नहीं लेना चाहते, हालांकि उन्हें कुछ लोगों ने सलाह दी है कि मैं कुछ करुं। मैं इस पूरे मामले को भूलना चाहता हूं और सारा ध्यान क्रिकेट पर लगाना चाहता हूं।
मैं चाहता हूं सभी का ध्यान टीम पर हो जो भारत में चैंपियंस ट्राफी खेलने रवाना होने वाली है। इसी के साथ पाकिस्तानी क्रिकेट बोर्ड के चेयरमैन शहरयार खान ने कहा कि पाकिस्तान क्रिकेट बोर्ड ने अपने सारे विकल्प खुले रखे हैं। उल्लेखनीय है कि इंजमाम को बाल टेंपरिंग विवाद से तो बरी कर दिया गया था, लेकिन क्रिकेट की छबि खराब करने के जुर्म में चार वन-डे मैचों का प्रतिबंध लगाया है। उन्होंने कहा कि कुछ पूर्व क्रिकेटर जिसमें इमरान भी शामिल है चाहते हैं कि हेयर पर मानहानि का मुकादमा लगाया जाए।

Inzamam to forgive Hair, AFP

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq said on Saturday he would not seek legal action against Australian umpire Darrell Hair after being cleared of ball tampering charges by the International Cricket Council.
"Our religion Islam teaches us to forgive and forget, so I forgive Hair and will not take any action against him," Inzamam said on return from London, where a two-day ICC hearing cleared him of ball tampering.
The 36-year-old captain was however handed a four-match ban for bringing the game into disrepute over his team's refusal to take the field in the fourth Test against England at The Oval last month.
The protest came after Hair and fellow umpire Billy Doctrove of the West Indies penalised Pakistan five runs on suspicion of ball tampering.
The ban will keep Inzamam out of the eight-team biennial ICC Champions Trophy competition that begins in India next month.
The Pakistan Cricket Board on Friday announced that Younis Khan would replace Inzamam as captain for the competition but extended Inzamam's tenure until next year's World Cup in the Caribbean.
Inzamam said he had nothing in his heart against the controversial Australian umpire.
"It will take time to forget what happened at The Oval but my heart is clear as always, and since we have been cleared of the more serious charge of ball tampering I think we should bury the matter," he said.
Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan and other ex-players had urged Inzamam to seek an apology and take the Australian to court for defamation.
Inzamam justified the decision not to appeal against the ban.
"The penalty imposed is the minimum in level III so it would neither be reduced nor would it be lifted if I had appealed. So I see no reason to take the matter any further."
The batsman said the support from the Pakistani people was overwhelming.
"It was a tough period for not only me but for our cricket -- and I am thankful to all the people who supported me and our cause of getting our name cleared of tampering.
"A four-match ban is nothing compared to the stigma of cheating, which could have destroyed our cricket. Had I not protested we would have to live with the stigma. I am happy that we are cleared," said Inzamam.
He said he would also sorely miss the Champions Trophy competition.
"It's the second-best event after the World Cup and I will miss it. But I am convinced that the team can deliver its best. We have a very good chance of winning the Trophy," said Inzamam, who vowed to return with a bang.
"We have a home series against the West Indies, then a tour of South Africa and finally the World Cup, so I will conserve my energies for these future assignments -- especially the World Cup, which we dearly want to win."
