12 passengers on Mumbai-bound flight held after ‘suspicious behaviour’

WASHINGTON: A Mumbai-bound plane was turned back mid-way on Wednesday and returned to Amsterdam’s Schipol airport under fighter plane escort.

Twenty minutes after the Northwest Airlines flight 42 with 149 passengers on board took off, the pilot radioed for permission to return and asked for a military escort. The Royal Netherlands Air Force sent two F-16 fighter jets to meet the plane. The plane was in German airspace at the time.

The airline said in a statement later that “a couple of passengers” aroused suspicion after “displaying behaviour of concern”.

After the plane landed, Dutch authorities detained several passengers for questioning. “We are cross-examining witnesses, passengers and crew,” a Dutch police spokesman said. Later in the night, 12 passengers were placed under arrest.

The exact nature of the security alert on board the plan was not known.

Airport spokeswoman Pamela Kuypers said that customs police were investigating and airport authorities had no further information on the nature of the alarm.

A Northwest spokesperson from the airline’s headquarters in Minnesota told DNA that Amsterdam-Mumbai flights will resume on Thursday after a one-day suspension.

The Amsterdam-Mumbai flight will leave at 9am and reach Mumbai at 8:30pm. The cancelled Mumbai-Amsterdam flight will leave on Friday at 10:30am.

आतंकी हमले की आशंका में मुंबई आ रहा विमान लौटा

एम्सटर्डम : आतंकी हमले की आशंका के मद्देनजर अमेरिका की नॉर्थवेस्ट एयरलाइंस का मुंबई जा रहा विमान (उड़ान संख्या 42) बुधवार को बीच रास्ते से ही यहां के शिफोल हवाईअड्डे पर लौट आया। इसे हालैंड के फौजी एफ16 विमान एस्कॉर्ट कर के यहां लाए। इसके कई यात्रियों से पहले पूछताछ की गई, फिर 12 को गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया। इस उड़ान को रद्द घोषित कर दिया गया। यह अब गुरुवार को मुंबई पहुंचेगी। यात्रियों को विभिन्न होटलों में ठहराया गया है। इनमें कई भारतीय हैं।

विमान एक दिन पहले दोपहर बाद 3.19 बजे अमेरिका के मिनैपोलिस से रवाना हुआ था और बुधवार सुबह 6.20 बजे एम्सटर्डम पहुंच कर 10.25 बजे वहां से मुबंई के लिए रवाना हुआ था। हवाईअड्डे की प्रवक्ता पामेला केपर्स के अनुसार एम्सटर्डम से उड़ान भरने के कुछ ही देर बाद पायलट ने लौटने की इजाजत और सेना की सुरक्षा मांगी। कस्टम पुलिस सुरक्षा अलर्ट की जांच कर रही है।

उन्होंने बताया कि सेलफोन पर संदिग्ध व्यवहार करने वाले 12 यात्रियों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया है। इस विमान में मोबाइल फोन ले जाने की इजाजत थी, लेकिन उस पर बात करने की मनाही थी। इसी विमान की एक यात्री अल्पा ने बताया कि उसने 11 लोगों को हथकड़ी में ले जाए जाते देखा। ये लोग दक्षिण एशियाई नजर आ रहे थे। उल्लेखनीय है कि 10 अगस्त को लंदन में विमानों के विस्फोट की साजिश का भंडाफोड़ होने के बाद दुनियाभर के हवाईअड्डों पर सुरक्षा कड़ी कर दी गई है।

नार्थवेस्ट के प्रवक्ता क्रिस्टिन हेनमैट्स ने बताया कि कुछ यात्रियों के व्यवहार से परेशान पायलट ने विमान एम्सटर्डम लौटाने की अनुमति मांगी थी।

डच राष्ट्रीय आतंकरोधी समन्वय कार्यालय को सूचना दे दी गई, लेकिन उसकी प्रवक्ता जूडिथ स्लुइटर ने कहा कि देश में आतंकी धमकी का स्तर बढ़ाने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है।

273 सीटों की क्षमता वाले इस डीसी 10—30 विमान में 149 यात्री थे।

पिछले साल भी इन्हीं परिस्थितियों में एक ब्रिटिश विमान शिफोल हवाईअड्डे पर लौटा था, लेकिन बाद में पता चला कि अलार्म महज अफवाह निकला।

Speed-breaker for Pakistan as ICC backs Darrell Hair

LONDON: International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Malcolm Speed insisted Pakistan would have no right of veto over the appointment of Darrell Hair after the umpire ruled they had forfeited last week’s fourth Test against England here at The Oval.

After previous run-ins with the Australian official, Pakistan made it clear they no longer wanted Hair involved in their matches. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan said his country was not “dictating” to the ICC in respect of Hair.

“Our team has a problem with his attitude on the field, that attitude has upset our team more than once, and if the ICC is sensitive to boards it will take due cognisance of what we have said,” the PCB chief said.

But Speed, who said on Tuesday he’d received a letter from Shaharyar, stressed that there would be no change in the appointment procedure.

He also backed the stance taken by fellow Australian Hair and Doctrove. “It is hugely regrettable that the match did not end with a great finish in front of a full house,” Speed said.

“That is something that would have acted as an appropriate conclusion to a series full of exciting and absorbing cricket (the forfeit gave England the four-match encounter 3-0). However it is not the role of the ICC to overturn the decisions of on-field umpires, the people who are enshrined in the Laws of Cricket as the sole judges of fair and unfair play, the ultimate arbiters of the game. In this instance, the decision made by Billy Doctrove and Darrell Hair to award the match to England was the correct one under the Laws.”

Speed then said there would be no change in the way Hair, or anyone else, was chosen to umpire a major match.

“It remains the role of the ICC and not our members to appoint umpires to Tests and one-day internationals. The choices are made by the ICC’s chief executive together with the chairman of the cricket committee, Sunil Gavaskar following recommendations from the ICC’s cricket department. The appointments are made without fear or favour and are based on the performances of the umpires in international matches.”

Shaharyar said the umpires’ actions had ramifications far beyond The Oval’s boundaries.

“In these days of tension outside the cricket ground, what a wonderful sight it is to see cricket between a Muslim country (Pakistan) and England, where the majority are Christians, with both sides being cheered, both sides being really appreciated. This is the spirit of cricket. Cricket offers a bridge of peace, why destroy this bridge over a technicality?”

England and Pakistan are due to play a Twenty20 international in Bristol on Monday with the one-day series proper starting in Cardiff a week Wednesday.

ओवल क्रिकेट टेस्ट को लेकर काफी कुछ कहा जा रहा है। अधिकांश लोगों की राय है कि पाकिस्तान टीम की गलती नहीं है लेकिन एक पाकिस्तानी होने के बाद भी मैं ऐसा कहने की जल्दबाजी नहीं करूंगा।

पाकिस्तान टीम रिवर्स स्विंग में अन्य देशों के गेंदबाजों से आगे है और वे मैच जीतने के लिए इस मारक अस्त्र का उपयोग करने के लिए बॉल टेम्परिंग भी कर सकते हैं।

यह स्पष्ट विचार सरफराज नवाज ने कराची से टेलीफोन पर इस प्रतिनिधि से बातचीत करते हुए व्यक्त किए। सरफराज जिन्हें कि रिवर्स स्विंग का जनक कहा जाता है उन्होंने कहा कि पाकिस्तान के बारे में स्पष्ट धारणा नहीं बनाने का कारण यह है कि 1992 में इंग्लैंड में ही जब वसीम अकरम और वकार यूनुस पर गेंद के साथ छेड़छाड़ करने का आरोप लगा तो मुझे विश्वास नहीं हुआ।

कब होता है रिवर्स स्विंग

सरफराज ने बताया कि गेंद जितनी पुरानी हो रिवर्स स्विंग कराने में सुविधा होती है। एशियाई देशों की जमीन पर गेंद जल्दी घिसती है इसलिए रिवर्स स्विंग से विकेट लेना आसान होता है लेकिन इंग्लैंड में नमी ज्यादा होने के कारण रिवर्स स्विंग आसानी से नहीं किया जा सकता है। चूंकि पाकिस्तान टीम जीतने के लिए छटपटा रही थी इसलिए उसने गेंद के साथ टेम्परिंग की होगी।

सरफराज ने सिखाया

पाकिस्तान में सरफराज नवाज ने सबसे पहले रिवर्स स्विंग का ईजाद किया। उसके बाद उन्होंने यह तकनीक इमरान खान को सिखाई। बाद में इमरान ने यही तकनीक वसीम अकरम और वकार को सिखाई। पाक टीम के अब नए खिलाड़ी भी रिवर्स स्विंग आसानी से कर लेते हैं। इस प्रकार यह तकनीक अब संपूर्ण विश्व में फैल गई है।
