Solar system to include 3 more planets

The International Astronomical Union on Wednesday proposed enlarging the world's understanding of the solar system to encompass 12 planets instead of the traditional nine, changing what billions of schoolchildren have been taught for generations.

But experts said that by the end of 2007, there could be dozens more.

"There's a whole list of candidates knocking at the door," said Owen Gingerich, who chairs the planetary definition committee of the IAU, the arbiter of what is -and isn't- a planet.

"Don't get stuck on this number 12, because that won't last the whole of next year," he told reporters in Prague, where 2,500 of the world's leading astronomers are considering a new definition for planets. "By the end of next year, there's going to be more."

The IAU says it has a "watchlist" of about a dozen potential candidates for planethood. Most would be known as "plutons" under a proposed new definition that would distinguish between eight classical planets- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune- and Pluto, along with objects like it in the far reaches of the solar system beyond Neptune.

दो साल की कड़ी मशक्कत के बाद बुधवार को अंतरराष्ट्रीय खगोलशास्त्रीय संघ (आईएयू) की एक विशेष समिति ने सौरमंडल के दूरस्थ सदस्य प्लूटो की किस्मत पर फैसला करने के लिए ‘ग्रह’ व ‘छोटे सौरमंडलीय पिंड’ की वैज्ञानिक परिभाषाओं को संघ के महाधिवेशन के सम्मुख मंजूरी के लिए पेश कर दिया।

इस परिभाषा पर अगर महाधिवेशन की मोहर लग जाती है तो हमारे सौरमंडल में ग्रहों की संख्या बढ़ कर बारह हो जाएगी। दुनिया भर के 2500 खगोलविज्ञानी आगामी 24 अगस्त तक ग्रह की नई परिभाषा पर बहस करेंगे और फिर मतविभाजन के जरिए परिभाषा को स्वीकार या अस्वीकार किया जाएगा।

अंतरराष्ट्रीय खगोलशास्त्रीय संघ की सात सदस्यीय समिति ने प्लूटो के ग्रह होने या नहीं होने से जुड़े विवाद को समाप्त करने के लिए ग्रहों की पहली वैज्ञानिक परिभाषा विशेषज्ञों के सम्मुख पेश की है। इस परिभाषा के अनुसार अब हमारे सौरमंडल में नौ की जगह बारह ग्रह होंगे- बुध, शुक्र, पृथ्वी, मंगल, सीरस, बृहस्पति, शनि, यूरेनस, नेपच्यून, प्लूटो, शेरन और 2003 यूबी-313।

यानी नई परिभाषा ने प्लूटो की हैसियत तो बरकरार रखी ही, तीन नए सौरमंडलीय पिंडों को भी ग्रहों की बिरादरी में शामिल किया है। तीनों नए ग्रह सीरस, शेरन और 2003यूबी-313 को अलग से ‘प्लूटॉन्स’ कहा जाएगा। भविष्य में यदि कुछ और सौरमंडलीय पिंड ग्रह की परिभाषा में खरे उतरते हैं तो उन्हें भी प्लूटॉन्स की बिरादरी में शामिल किया जाएगा। प्लूटॉन्स ऐसे सौरमंडलीय पिंड हैं जो सूर्य की परिक्रमा में 200 वर्ष या उससे ज्यादा समय लगाते हैं और शास्त्रीय ग्रहों की तुलना में भिन्न तल से परिक्रमा करते हैं।
